Mechanical Design Engineer (HVAC/Plumbing)

Full Project Responsibility / Operational Leadership

Position Summary

The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for designing, analyzing, and coordinating HVAC and plumbing systems for commercial and industrial projects. This role involves preparing construction documents, performing load calculations, and ensuring designs meet code requirements, project specifications, and client expectations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design HVAC systems including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and exhaust systems
  • Perform load calculations (heating/cooling) using industry software (e.g., Trane Trace, Carrier HAP)
  • Develop equipment selections, ductwork layouts, and piping systems
  • Prepare detailed engineering drawings using AutoCAD and/or Revit (BIM)
  • Coordinate designs other trades
  • Review project specifications, codes, and standards (ASHRAE, IPC, IMC, NFPA, etc.)
  • Conduct site visits, field surveys, and construction support as needed
  • Assist with submittal reviews, RFIs, and construction administration
  • Ensure designs meet energy efficiency and sustainability requirements
  • Support project managers with scheduling, budgeting, and technical input Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • 2–8+ years of experience in HVAC and/or plumbing design (depending on level)
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Revit
  • Familiarity with load calculation software (HAP, Trace, or similar)
  • Strong understanding of mechanical and plumbing codes and standards
  • Ability to read and interpret construction documents
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
