Position Description

The Aerial Lineman is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and repair of overhead telecommunications systems. This position performs physically demanding field work including installing strand, coaxial, and fiber optic cable, operating aerial equipment, and ensuring all work is completed safely and according to project specifications. The Aerial Lineman also assists with job site preparation, material handling, equipment operation, and site restoration while maintaining Universal Services’ standards for safety, quality, and productivity.

Compensation range reflects Universal Services’ good-faith estimate at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on experience, certifications, skills, market conditions, and internal equity.

Core Responsibilities

· Construct, maintain, and repair aerial telecommunications lines and systems.

· Install strand, coax, and fiber optic cable according to project and customer specifications.

· Operate bucket trucks, climb poles, and use fall protection and climbing gear safely.

· String and secure aerial cable using lashers, pulleys, and other rigging tools.

· Install hardware, anchors, guy wires, and other supporting structures.

· Read and interpret job prints, maps, and daily work packets.

· Prepare and maintain safe job sites, including signage, cones, and traffic control devices.

· Operate hand and power tools including tampers, drills, mechanical hoists, and impact wrenches.

· Perform daily vehicle inspections, maintain equipment, and ensure tools are clean and operational.

· Assist with pulling cables through conduit and other underground or transition work when needed.

· Conduct site restoration and cleanup following job completion.

· Communicate with Foreman, Project Managers, and Warehouse staff to coordinate materials and

workflow.

· Follow all Universal safety procedures and ensure crew compliance with OSHA and DOT regulations.

· Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications & Experience

· Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement and DOT medical card may

be required.

· 3+ years of experience in aerial or telecommunications construction.

· Skilled in pole climbing, bucket truck operation, and use of fall arrest systems.

· Strong understanding of aerial construction practices, materials, and tools.

· Ability to read and interpret blueprints, maps, and technical work documents.

· Comfortable working at heights up to 50 feet and in outdoor environments year-round.

· Experience operating hand and power tools used in telecom construction.

· Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team.

· Excellent attention to detail, safety awareness, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Experience

· Electrical Line Worker diploma, associate degree, or equivalent training.

· Knowledge of fiber splicing, coax systems, or field troubleshooting.

· Experience mentoring groundmen or laborers.

· Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred but not required.

Physical Demands

· Ability to climb poles and ladders up to 50 feet safely and repeatedly.

· Lift and carry 50–60 lbs. consistently throughout the day.

· Stand, walk, bend, and kneel for extended periods.

· Work outdoors in all weather conditions and varying terrains.

· Perform tasks that require coordination, balance, and strength.

Work Environment

· Outdoor construction setting, working year-round in all weather conditions.

· Exposure to heights, mechanical equipment, and live traffic environments.

· Requires flexibility to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and emergency response shifts.

· Regular travel between job sites may be required.

Schedule

· Full-time, non-exempt position.

· Monday–Friday schedule with flexibility for weekends, evenings, and emergency work as needed.

· Overtime available based on workload and seasonal demand.

Training & Development Competencies

New Hire Development

• Complete Universal onboarding and safety orientation.

• Receive hands-on training in PPE use, pole climbing, bucket truck operation, and fall protection.

• Demonstrate ability to identify aerial materials, cable types, and hardware.

• Learn safe job site setup, traffic control, and restoration procedures.

• Assist with strand and cable installation under direct supervision.

• Participate in daily safety meetings and demonstrate knowledge of Universal’s safety policies.

Ongoing Development

• Demonstrate independent ability to construct and repair aerial telecom systems.

• Perform advanced work including pole transfers, anchor installation, and tensioning.

• Crosstrain in underground and ISP construction to support company-wide operations.

• Mentor laborers and groundmen to develop safe and efficient work habits.

• Develop troubleshooting and maintenance skills for aerial and coax systems.

• Participate in leadership and equipment training for advancement into Foreman roles
